Make Your Summer Tee Fall-Ready With This Simple Sewing Trick

Dressing for the beginning of fall is always tough. Some days the sun keeps shining bright, other days colder weather finally hits and it feels like the ultimate cut-off for wearing your light off-the-shoulder dress and all the other breezy pieces. Luckily, it’s nothing a little layering can’t fix, meaning you can keep rocking your fave summer top right alongside the rest of your fall capsule wardrobe essentials all season long. With this in mind, today we’re showing you an easy way to elongate your most-loved warm-weather tee and transform it into the perfect versatile piece you can layer all fall long.

Materials and Tools:
  • old tee
  • tulle fabric
  • matching thread
  • lace trim
  • pins
  • fabric scissors
  • tailor’s chalk
  • ruler
  • sewing machine
Instructions:

1. Fold your tulle twice and pin in place. Decide how long you want the bottom of your tee to be, then draw two parallel lines using tailor’s chalk. Cut following the lines.
2. With your tee facing right side out, slide the tulle through the waist and pin so that the bottom part of the tulle strip and the bottom edge of the tee meet. Be sure that the center part of both top and skirt match, then pin all around the edge and sew in place.
3. Pin the side edges of the tulle strip and sew, following the dashed line as shown below.
4. Take your lace trim and place it where the tulle meets the tee. Pin all around and sew it in place.
5. Repeat step four, but this time, pin the lace trim all around the sleeve openings.

First, take your tulle scrap and fold it twice so that it’s easier to work with it. Then pin it in place. Now decide how long you want the bottom of your tee to be, and draw two parallel lines with tailor’s chalk. Cut following those lines.

Next, slide the tulle through your tee’s bottom edge and pin so that the bottom part of the tulle strip and the bottom edge of the t-shirt meet. Then pin all around the edge and sew in place. Once you’re done, pin the side edges of the tulle strip as well and sew once again following the dashed line, as shown above. At this point, take your lace trim and place it where the tulle meets the tee. Pin all around and sew it in place. Finally, repeat the last step - but this time, pin the lace trim all around the sleeve’s openings. VoilĂ , you’re done!

When it’s warm outside, I like to wear this top with a simple pair of jeans for a comfy, casual look. When it gets a bit chillier I love to layer a cute blazer or a neutral trench for a classier ensemble.
